Fly-tippers force Tesco to set up CCTV

THE scourge of fly-tippers has forced the removal of the large cardboard recycling containers at the Tesco store in Prestwich.

Now, 24-hour CCTV is to be set up at the Valley Park Road store with a warning that future offenders will be prosecuted.

The supermarket and Bury Council environmental health officers are fed up with people using the 8ft-high bins for dumping all kinds of rubbish.

Tesco’s recycling bins will remain for collecting plastic, glass and textiles, while smaller bins to collect paper and cardboard will also be available.

A Bury Council spokesman said: “Residents can recycle their paper and card at the kerbside if they use the green bag provided.

“Those without a green bag can put the card and paper out in a carrier bag, not a black bin liner, and we will leave a green bag after collection. Green bags are collected once every two weeks.”

The spokesman added: “Residents and traders should be aware they have a legal responsibility to know where their rubbish is being taken if they employ someone to collect their waste.

“They should ensure that whoever handles their waste is a registered waste carrier and that the waste goes to a registered site for suitable disposal, otherwise they will be liable to prosecution.”
