Horror minibus crash shut M60 for two hours

FIFTEEN people were injured when their minibus crashed and overturned on the M60 at Whitefield, causing traffic chaos.

The minibus suffered a tyre blow out near junction 17 last Thursday evening.

It then collided with a Renault Laguna car in the nearside lane, before spinning on to its side and crashing into the central reservation.

The incident caused long tailbacks in Prestwich as police closed the anti-clockwise M60 for two hours.

All 15 people injured were passengers on the minibus from Bradford heading to Manchester Airport.

A police spokesman said six were taken away on spinal boards and another nine were “walking wounded”.

All 15 were given oxygen and taken to local hospitals, including North Manchester General and Fairfield.

One man in his 40s suffered several fractures but was discharged from hospital the following day.

An off-duty paramedic, who was driving in the opposite direction, saw the crash and helped the wounded, a fire service spokesman said.

Police vehicles, six ambulances and three fire crews, from Whitefield, Broughton and Agecroft, attended.

Whitefield fire station watch commander, John Van Geffen, praised those who came to the aid of the crash victims.

He said: “There was an off-duty ambulanceman travelling on the opposite carriageway. He saw the crash, alerted the ambulance services and doubled back at the next junction to help.”
