IT was action all the way for a 999 emergency day at a high school.
Firefighters, police officers and paramedics attended Elton High School, in Bury, to deal with a road traffic accident.
Three passengers with various injuries, including a severe wound, spinal and neck injuries, were trapped in the vehicle and had to be cut free.
But there was no real blood shed, as it was all part of a “taster day” to launch a new qualification at the school in Walshaw Road.
The society, health and development diploma is open to students aged 14 plus at all Bury high schools and is equivalent to seven GCSEs at grades A* to C. It will begin in September when lessons will be taught on Tuesdays and Thursdays from both Elton High and Bury College.
After the mock accident, police officers took statements from the students who acted as witnesses, while others watched to see how it was done.
Students were later shown how the statements are put together to make a case which is put to the Crown Prosecution Service.
In the afternoon, pupils took part in a roleplay session at a magistrates court hearing to learn the possible sentences which the offender might be given for aggravated vehicle taking and driving under the influence of cannabis.
The council’s Early Break service gave demonstrations on alternative treatments for substance users, such as acupuncture and boxing, while Six Town Housing explained how it supports those who suffer injuries resulting in disability. Both also talked about the effect such an incident has on the social services.
Police Insp Bryn Williams, who helped organise the event, said the day had been a great success: “We enjoyed it and it was a really successful day.
“It was good to be involved with these young people and we look forward to working with Elton High School in the future when the new diploma gets underway.”
