A BURY housing association is to be part of a green energy “micro-grid” in Greater Manchester.
Six Town Housing is to fit wind and solar power equipment on some of its properties, along with hundreds of other houses and flats.
Each home could generate up to £900 worth of renewable energy each year.
Plans for the grid are being developed by the Horizon Energy Co-operative. It says it could bring in £20 million in revenue from renewable energy per year, generate 250 megawatts of electricity and save two million tonnes of carbon.
The resulting energy will be pooled, with some distributed locally and some sold to the National Grid.
The project is the first of its kind in England. The co-op involves Manchester-based EIC Partnership and a number of social housing organisations.
Six Town Housing which was set up five years ago to manage houses for Bury Council.
EIC managing director Andrew Melchior said: “Our energy will be used to drive down the costs of electricity and hot water for people in need of help with energy bills, while also supplying community-generated green energy to householders in the North West.”
