Dad tells of son’s accident agony

A FATHER has spoken of the battle facing his son after he was left paralysed from the neck down in a horrific car crash.

Mr Allan Pearson said his 23-year-old son Alex had been “putting a brave face on” since he was informed about the extent of his injuries.

Mr Pearson, of Prettywood, Heap Bridge, said: “We are just hoping that he gets some movement back in his upper body. Anything else would be miraculous.

“He has been made aware that he has serious damage, but the doctors won’t say that he will never walk again.

“We are taking it day by day. The next step is to get him talking.”

Mr Pearson, who works for Ring-and-Ride, was preparing to get up for an early shift when the taxi in which Alex was a passenger crashed in Heap Bridge on January 29. The accident is under police investigation.

Mr Pearson said: “There was ice on the road so if it wasn’t the taxi driver’s fault, then he is as much a victim as my son.”

A charity event held at Heap Bridge social club last Saturday raised £2,200 for an appeal set up in Alex’s name. Friends want to raise money to help pay for Alex’s recovery and future care.

Fundraising organiser, Javed Iqbal, said: “I would like to thank all those who took part in such a fantastic night and particularly those people who donated items to the appeal. I would also like to thank the Bury Times for helping to raise awareness of this appeal. We are now also selling the Alex Pearson appeal wristbands, designed with the George cross so they also show support for the England football team’s bid for World Cup glory.”

Wristbands are available for £2 from the Seven Stars, Turf and the Trafalgar pubs, and also Heap Bridge social club.

The next fundraiser is at the Trafalgar pub in Manchester Road on Saturday, March 20. For tickets, or to donate auction prizes: contact javok@ o2.co.uk
