EURO MP Gary Titley is supporting a network to improve the search for missing children across the continent.
The Radcliffe-based MEP is being backed by Kate and Gerry McCann, who went to Brussels last week to campaign.
Mr Titley, Labour leader in the European Parliament, said he was appalled to discover that details of abducted or missing children were not collected across Europe.
"With free movement between 27 member states and the ability of EU citizens to live, work or study anywhere in the EU, children disappearing is inevitably becoming more a cross-border issue," he said.
"Comprehensive, EU-wide figures on missing children are essential."
Mr Titley also urged the Commission to extend a free phone helpline for missing children (116000) to all EU countries.
