An ambitious Bury College apprentice is combining his love of science with hands-on laboratory work as he masters the skills and knowledge to progress into a leading industry.

Ross Walker from Walmersley in Bury is one year into his two year Laboratory Technician apprenticeship programme at Microbiological Solutions Ltd. Ross splits his time between working with the Regulatory Team and undertaking work in the laboratory.

Ross’s laboratory work involves quality control where it is vital that he adheres to the Laboratory Code of Practice. Whist working with the Regulatory Team, Ross compiles product information files and logs important client information.

19 year old Ross discovered this career-enhancing apprenticeship opportunity though the recruitment team based at the Employment Gateway. Committed to helping individuals find apprenticeship opportunities, the Employment Gateway is a partnership between Bury College and key agencies in Bury.

The former Harper Green School pupil said of his apprenticeship, “I applied for my apprenticeship through the Employment Gateway and they really helped me with my CV and interview tips. I chose the apprenticeship route because I wanted to gain a recognised qualification, whilst learning from industry professionals. I am thoroughly enjoying my apprenticeship and would recommend apprenticeships to everyone. Upon completion I would like to progress onto a higher apprenticeship and work my way up within the business.”

Microbiological Solutions Ltd, a laboratory service which specialises in all aspects of the microbiological testing of cosmetics, toiletries, personal care and household products, currently employs two Bury College apprentices. The Bury based business is extremely proud to be offering opportunities to individuals and training the technicians of the future.

Alex Fotheringham, Cosmetics Manager at Microbiological Solutions Ltd, acts as Ross’s mentor and is impressed with the progress that Ross has made. Alex said, “Ross is an excellent member of the team who has settled in very well. In this first year Ross has added practical value and has helped to improve existing processes.”
