Business Awards 2008
Training is in spotlight at awards
THE training and development of young people will take centre stage at the Bolton and Bury Business Awards this year with the Schools Enterprise Award.
The category is new this year and reflects the importance of creating a link between education and the workplace for young people.
It will recognise schools which are equipping their pupils with business skills and understanding.
AXA Insurance will sponsor the award following its move to a new site at The Parklands, Bolton.
Pat Brady, head of learning and development at AXA Insurance, said the company wants to forge better links with the community in Bolton.
"We have had an association with Bolton since 1903 and during the last 100 years we have had some very good staff from the town. We want to continue to support and help the local schools, so they can provide future employees, not just for AXA, but for other businesses in the area."
Axa has "adopted" Westhoughton High School and is using the relationship to coach pupils on life skills and give them an awareness of the working environment.
Ms Brady added: "We want to give them business skills and life skills plus an awareness of the work environment, taking away some of the myths and fears and giving them effective communication skills, while understanding the importance of education."
AXA is also working closely with Bolton Skills Council on the apprenticeship scheme, which is designed to give poorly qualified young people, between the ages of 16 and 18, a chance at a white collar job.
The Business Awards will be held at a glittering ceremony at the De Vere Whites Hotel at the Reebok Stadium on June 26.
Ten categories will recognise exceptional performance across the business world with awards ranging from customer excellence and community values, through to start-up businesses and technology and design. To enter the awards go to www.boltonandburybusinessawards.co.uk.
