Inspector A. Cottam points out the workings of the "Beamster" to the Mayor of Radcliffe, Alderman Vernon Isherwood.

LANCASHIRE County Police teamed up with the County and Radcliffe Road Safety Committees to hold lighting tests in the town.

Of the 100 vehicles tested outside the Odeon, only a quarter of the headlights were working correctly.

But despite the numbers with defects, a leading local garage told the Radcliffe Times that only one driver had asked to have his lights corrected.

First in the queue to take the test was the Mayor of Radcliffe, Alderman Vernon Isherwood, and his Vauxhall car.

The meter, which calculates whether the lights cast their beam in the correct position on the road, showed that his car was perfect.

After the test, Alderman Isherwood said: "I think that all motorists should have their headlights tested, for their own safety and for the safety of pedestrians and other motorists.

"I am pleased to see so many cars taking the test.

"It shows motorists are becoming more safety-minded."

The policeman conducting the test explained to drivers what was wrong with their vehicles.

Most of the vehicles had beams which were either too high or too low..
