Do you think it is right that the landlord of the Duke William pub in Ainsworth has been ordered to pull down a smoking shelter which had been built without planning permission?

CONSERVATIVE MP John Profumo was the guest speaker at Bury and Radcliffe Conservative and Unionist Association's annual dinner.

The Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies was joined by his wife, the actress and film star Valerie Hobson.

Mr Profumo told guests, who had gathered at Derby Hall in Bury, that the Conservative Government had not been given enough kudos for the good work it had done during the five years in power.

He said that although the cost of living had increased, wages had gone up more quickly in comparison.

He pointed out that the old age pension had increased three times and that the Government was trying to reduce taxation. He also voiced concerns about the "problem of the million or so young people now on the electoral register for the first time, and some of whom did not know much more than where Elvis Presley was going to appear next, or something like that."

Mr Profumo was speaking in response to a toast to the Government, proposed by John C. Bidgood, who was the MP for Bury and Radcliffe.

Mr Bidgood said it was the easiest thing in the world to support a popular Government, and urged members to support the Government through "thick and thin".

He added: "We now need your co-operation, your support and your loyalty more than at any time since 1951."
