Passengers could find catching the tram in Radcliffe a nourishing experience.

Helpers from the Prestwich branch of Incredible Edible have already created planting areas on grass verges at Heaton Park and Prestwich Metrolink stations.

Now their latest project is a planting area at Radcliffe station.

The aim is to encourage residents and tram users to take pride in their surroundings — and to help themselves to the odd lettuce or strawberry once they are fully grown.

Mark Lockwood, a member of the group, said: “We know that the previous projects had been very well received by both Metrolink passengers and general passers-by so we thought it was an excellent idea to get planting down at Radcliffe.

“We are just an enthusiastic group of individuals dedicated to growing fruit and vegetables for local people and encouraging people to eat healthily.”

Metrolink Director Peter Cushing said: “We feel that this type of work brings real benefit to local people and enhances the transport experience for all those that use the stops.

“Not only can people help themselves to healthy, freshly grown produce while they wait for their tram, they can also enjoy the pleasant atmosphere created by a carefully tended garden area.

“I look forward to getting a handful of strawberries next time I use the Bury line.”

Tony Dale, System Presentation Manager at Metrolink RATP Dev Ltd, who is behind the project, said:

“We’re always on the lookout for new and innovative ideas to improve the customer experience at our stops and this project really ticks the box.

“More importantly it’s a healthy and practical solution to how we make the areas surrounding our stops more appealing to customers.
