Do you think it is right that the landlord of the Duke William pub in Ainsworth has been ordered to pull down a smoking shelter which had been built without planning permission?

Charity bash was a big success

A HOST of famous faces turned out on Saturday to help raise more than £100,000 in memory of murdered Bury schoolboy Joe Geeling.

Coronation Street stars William Roache and Tupele Dorgu, ex-Bolton Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce, former Gladiator Jet, and comedian Peter Kay were among the 400 guests at the Shining Star Ball at the Midland Hotel in Manchester.

The ball was organised by the Joe Geeling Trust which was set up to raise much need funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust and the New Children's Hospital Appeal following the 11-year-old St Gabriel's RC High School pupil's murder in March 2006.

Committee member Susan Chicken said the ball raised around £110,000 with more money still to come. She said: "It was a fantastic evening. We owe a huge thank you to everyone who supported the event, in particular the main sponsors, Nationwide and Peel Holdings, whose support made a massive difference to the evening."

Auction prizes included a Top Gun' experience in a fighter plane, a day on board a Royal Navy ship and an England football shirt signed by new manager Fabio Capello.

Peter Kay offered the chance for eight people to have dinner with him and watch the filming of his new show which sold for £16,000.

Joe's parents, Tom and Gwen, of Devon Street, Bury, were at the event. Tom said: "It took the committee 12 months of planning and hard work to the put the event together but it all paid off and the ball was a fabulous success.

"The ball totally exceeded everyone's expectations. It made us proud that people had a great night."
