Mentally ill lodger strangled mum of one

A jury has found that a 37-year-old mentally ill man killed a mother-of-one he was lodging with.

Imtiaz Imran Ahmed was deemed, during a hearing at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square, to not be fit to plead to a charge of murder.

But a jury decided he had strangled 21-year-old Jeanette Hullah.

Ahmed was detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act.

Jeanette's body was found at her home on Galsworthy Avenue, Cheetham Hill, on December 14, 2006.

Ahmed, who suffers from schizoaffective disorder, was a lodger at the house in Galsworthy Avenue when he attacked Jeanette.

He had been asked to leave the house, but remained there, was not making an effort to find work and had stopped paying the rent.

On the day she died Jeanette had called her partner to tell him Ahmed was still there.

Ahmed strangled her and attached the end of the ligature to a cabinet, possibly in an attempt to suggest she had committed suicide.

Jeanette's partner, Muhammed Farhan Akhter, has been left devastated by her death.

In a Victim Impact Statement handed to the court, he said: "I miss everything about Jay. We used to spend every moment we could together.

"I really miss her on her birthday and my son Humza's birthday. All special occasions now have something missing from them.

"I miss her every single day. I keep her clothes and a picture of her by my bed along with pictures of Humza. Not having Jay has made me so much more reliant on other people. I only ever saw my future with her.

"Jay did and still does mean everything to me."

Speaking after the court case, Detective Sergeant Kay Dennison, of Grey Mare Lane CID said: "This is a really tragic case and Jeanette's partner, son and her family who live in Newcastle-upon-Tyne are struggling to come to terms with the death of Jeanette."
