AN electric heater left next to a sofa sparked a blaze in a flat.
Firefighters from Atherton and Leigh were called to Georgian Court, Tyldesley, at 5.50am on Saturday.
The living room was destroyed in the blaze and the rest of the flat damaged by smoke.
A man who was in the property at the time escaped before the fire crews arrived.
Atherton watch commander Shaun Aspey warned of the dangers of using portable heaters. He said: "If you do use one, you need to make sure it is in a safe place and not near to anything that may ignite as they radiate heat."
Firefighters were at the scene for 90 minutes.
