ROLL up! Roll up! It is time for the start of this year’s outdoor festivities and fun-filled extravanganzas in Prestwich.

Organisers of Prestwich Clough Day are putting the finishing touches to this Sunday’s event in St Mary’s Flower Park, off Bury New Road, from noon to 5pm.

The event began in 2006 to mark the centenary of The Clough opening to the public, and Clough Day is now the traditional curtain-raiser for the town’s major summer events, including the Parklife Weekender, Bands in the Park, Prestwich Carnival, Prestwich Book Festival and the Festwich cover bands event.

David Stanley, one of the Clough Day organisers, said: “Sunday will get all of that underway and we have put together an absolutely fantastic programme of entertainment. There is something for everyone.

“We’ve had some sponsorship from Lidl this year, which has helped us a lot. We just need good weather now.”

On the music front, there will be an organist, a bagpipe player and performances from Oldham Lees Band, Radcliffe Brass Band, Red Rose Brass Band and Sunshine Steel Band.

There will also be a modern dance performance, several folk acts and a circus performer.

Visitors can learn about Prestwich’s history, watch a falconry display, and discover the delights of fishing, ferret keeping and bat watching.

Among the local groups running stalls will be Butterstile Children’s Centre, the Creative Living Centre, and Prestwich and District Incredible Edible.

Younger guests can take part in a treasure hunt and visit a magician, a face painter and Punch and Judy.

Prestwich Book Festival will also run a stall providing fun activities for three to 12 year olds throughout the day, after supporters rallied round and raised £1,000 for the festival.

Activities include a drawing workshop with children’s author Vanessa Lees, the performance of a play called Spark, the Wizard Goblin, storytelling with Honor Giles and a poetry and colouring session with poet Tony Walsh.

Organiser Ebba Brooks said: “I am hugely grateful to everyone who has donated money.”

There will be a wide range of stalls selling food and items such as cakes, doughnuts, ice cream, artwork and jewellery.

Among the scores of groups showcasing their talents at the event will be the 7th Prestwich Brownies who will be selling brownie cakes to raise funds.

Brown owl Helen White said: “We aim to ‘grow’ a brownie memory tree where ex-brownies can add some of their wonderful memories and we’re hoping that this will be displayed in Prestwich Library.

“We have also asked our current brownies to tell us of their favourite activities so that we can showcase their fantastic adventures.”
