PUB landlords hoping not to lose out during a major festival have been given a boost by police.

When Parklife Weekender took place in Heaton Park last summer, police ordered that nearby pubs should hire at least two door staff.

Pubs such as the Commercial Inn, the Parkside Hotel, The Ostrich and the Woodthorpe had previously enjoyed a roaring trade when Oasis and The Stone Roses played in the park.

But it was a different story for Parklife Weekender last year, when the day turned into a damp squib for licensees as revellers entered the park early.

The pubs, which paid about £20 an hour per doorman — and some had up to five — forked out more than £2,000 for security over the weekend.

Police have now agreed to let pubs make their own arrangements at this year’s festival on June 7 and 8.

One landlord, who asked not to be named, said: “Last year was a farce. It was worse than a normal weekend.

“We lost money because potential customers were ushered from the Metrolink into the park.”

Another licensee said their pub’s takings were only one-third of a normal weekend.

Jim Bollard, landlord of The Woodthorpe, in Bury Old Road, said: “We are pleased that the police have relaxed things.

“It was difficult last year, but we were able to deal with what was thrown at us, whereas other pubs that are freeholds may have struggled because of what they had to pay for.

“We had five door staff on last year and will have two this year. We will also be allowing people to drink out of glasses inside, rather than plastic cups, as was the case last year.

“It’s sensible that the police are allowing us to use our own judgement.”

Supt Wasim Chaudhry, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “We have listened to the concerns of local licensees regarding last year’s event.

“Licensees have been made fully aware of their licensing responsibilities and all partners will be working together to make this event as successful and as safe as possible.”
