A BUSINESSMAN from Prestwich has been sentenced for fly-tipping rubbish.

Mohammad Bashir, aged 30, of Rainsough Brow, has been given a three-year conditional discharge by Bury magistrates.

Bashir admitted one count of failing to take all measures to securely dispose of waste. He was ordered to pay £435 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Staff from Rochdale Council had been called to Simon Lane in Middleton on October 22 last year after a member of the public spotted a pile of waste.

A council spokesman said a substantial amount of correspondence within the waste was addressed to Chapel Walk Convenience Store, in Chapel Walk, Middleton, or Mr Bashir.

“Mr Bashir accepted that approximately half of the waste in the fly-tip was from his business and explained that this had been removed by a gentleman whose name and address we could not verify.”

The spokesman added: “While Mr Bashir showed us some documentation to show that he disposed of his cardboard and packaging through authorised channels, he could produce no documentation in respect of the waste we found fly-tipped.”
