STAFF from a out-of-school club have been praised for turning things around.

The Phoenix Centre, based in St Mary's Park, Prestwich, has facilities for up to 42 children aged under 17 and has eight staff employed by Prestwich Methodist Youth Association.

Many of the children go to St Mary's and St Hilda's primary schools and visit the club before and after school.

Last November, inspectors from education watchdog Ofsted visited the centre and gave it the lowest rating of 'inadequate'.

Inspectors reported there was poor organisation, weak self-evaluation and criticised the range of activities on offer for younger children.

The team returned on May 11 and have awarded the centre a 'good' rating — the second highest.

Inspector Helen Gaze said: "Staff provide a well-planned environment, which provides children with the opportunity to explore interesting activities. Consequently, children become independent and active learners.

"Children benefit from the warm and caring relationships they have developed with staff, who have built up trusting and supportive relationships with parents.

"Staff benefit from the support they receive from the manager. They demonstrate a good understanding of how to safeguard children."

Inspectors particularly praised staff for teaching children about road safety.

To achieve the top rating of 'outstanding', the club is being asked to further develop children's thinking and to give more feedback to parents.

Mark Jones, who has just taken over as manager of the centre, paid tribute to his predecessor Gill Bailey, who recently retired.

He said: "This outcome is all down to Gill and the hardworking staff under her. They have done a great job.

"The report has given the staff a huge lift and I am looking forward to becoming part of the team and maintaining these high levels and raising them further.

"This is a wonderful performance and I am sure parents will be pleased with the report."
