BUDDING musicians at a Bolton school were treated to a masterclass from Elbow drummer Richard Jupp.

Jupp, who has set up his own drum school in between writing new material for the band, led a four hour workshop at Canon Slade School on Saturday.

The thirteen lucky youngsters, who had varying degrees of drumming experience, spent the day learning how to improve their skills and handle the physical demands of drumming professionally.

Elbow's five members are due to come back together early next year to work on new material, following up their first number one album The Take Off and Landing of Everything, with frontman Guy Garvey having recently released his first solo album.

Jupp said: "What I can hopefully teach these kids is about discipline, groove, awareness and just enjoying playing.

"The kids have been absolutely brilliant. I have been able to run a couple of these sessions in the last few weeks, in between writing for Elbow. It's strange having a bit of time off from the band, but Guy going off and doing his solo stuff has given me a wonderful chance to get this drum school started. There's a great mix here between people who have never touched a drum set before and some who are more experienced.

"I taught myself to drum on my thighs, so this is a long way forward from the way I learned to play.

"It's really good that I can take this kit into schools, and provide the opportunity for children to kick on with their drumming and to have fun."

Simon Rees, the school's development officer, helped arrange the session and is hopeful that similar events can return to Bolton's schools in the near future.

He said: "It's great that Richard was able to to come in and deliver this masterclass for our pupils, who were very keen to take advantage of this amazing opportunity to improve their drumming skills.

"We have never done anything like this here before and our hope now is that we can bring it back again, and also open it up to the wider community."
