THE latest step in the renovation of a run-down housing estate is complete, after the final tenants moved into a second new development.

Great Places Housing Group have built 18 three-bedroom homes for ‘affordable rent' on the site of the former Tulle Court in Prestwich.

The new development complements previous schemes carried out by Great Places in the area - the refurbishment of the retained block of the original Tulle Court, and the new older person’s bungalows on the former St Mary’s Court site.

Councillor Jane Black, St Mary’s ward councillor and Bury Council’s deputy cabinet member for finance and housing, said: "The council has worked closely with Great Places to ensure that this site, which had been run-down for a long time, has been brought back into use, providing quality homes in a central Prestwich location for families."

The houses have been built in materials sympathetic to the surrounding properties, in particular those in the conservation area on Church Lane.

One of the tenants delighted with her new property is Juliette Leighton, who moved into Tulle Court in October with her three children from an over-crowded flat in Prestwich.

Juliette said she loves her new home and is "very happy with its quiet location and good neighbours." She thanked the builders and also her family and friends, who helped her furnish the home.

Great Places acquired the site in 2014 after development had stalled for a number of years due to the downturn in the housing market. As a result, the site had become unsightly and attracted anti-social behaviour.

Peter Bojar, director of development at Great Places Housing Group, said: “We have worked closely with our partners at Bury Council to complete the development so we can provide much-needed homes in the area. We are delighted that the family has now moved in and hope they enjoy living in their new home.”
