THREE men armed with an axe and a sledgehammer stole a large number of mobile phones in a 'violent' robbery. 

The three men entered the Carphone Warehouse in Bury New Road, Prestwich, wearing motorcycle helmets and wielding a sledgehammer and an axe before threatening staff.

They then demanded that staff members open the tills and when they were unable to went in to the back room of the shop and stole a large number of mobile phones.

A member of staff also had their car keys stolen but the car was not taken.

The incident took place shortly after 4.40pm on Monday.

A 48-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery and bailed pending further enquiries.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Inspector with Greater Manchester Police, Lee Griffin, said: “This was a violent robbery and staff were understandably scared to be confronted by men wielding weapons.

“If you saw the robbery, or the men fleeing the scene, or have any information about who is responsible, I urge you to get in touch with us.”
