A WOMAN has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man died when he was struck by a tram.

Police and the ambulance service were called to Manchester Victoria train station shortly after 7.50pm yesterday evening following reports that a man had been hit.

The man died at the scene soon after emergency services arrived.

Greater Manchester Police have arrested a 31-year-old woman on suspicion of murder.

Whilst tram services passing through Manchester Victoria were affected last night – including on the Bury line – the network is now running as normal.

Bob Tonge, Senior Investigating Officer of GMP’s Major Incident Support Unit, said: “This is a tragic event where a man has lost his life and the circumstances surrounding this are being fully investigated.

“We will be questioning the woman in custody later today to ascertain the exact circumstances of how the man came to his death and my thanks goes to those who witnessed the incident and have got in touch with us – your accounts have been extremely helpful and have meant we have been able to escalate our enquiries quickly.”
