CALLING all runners and lovers of a new challenge — Cancer Research UK is launching a new muddy, thigh-burning Tough 10 challenge in Prestwich this month.

The 10k trail run takes place in Heaton Park on November 26, pitting runners against challenging muddy slopes, thigh-burning hills and tough terrain to raise money for life-saving research.

The event is open to men and women aged over 16 with a £25 entry fee.

Kirsti Thompson, Cancer Research UK event manager, said: "Tough 10 promises fierce inclines and stunning views to take your breath away.

"Every muddy slope conquered brings us a step closer to beating all cancers.

"We know Manchester has got what it takes to tackle Tough 10 and we’re delighted to be hosting the event in the city for the first time.

"Every day, around 110 people in the North West are diagnosed with cancer and that’s why we need as many people as possible to double knot their trainers and take on our stamina-testing course."

The Manchester Tough 10 is one of several taking place around the UK with each event marked tough, tougher or toughest based on the level of difficulty.

The Heaton Park route is ranked tough so it is suitable for regular runners or first timers looking for a challenge.

Organisers, who also run the popular Race for Life and Pretty Muddy women-only events, hope around 600 people will enter the Heaton Park Tough 10, and raise around £35,000 to help Cancer Research UK fight the disease and develop treatments.

Kirsti continued: “We’ve got cancer on the run. Today 1 in 2 people diagnosed with the disease survive. But we need to do more.

"Our ambition is to accelerate progress and see 3 in 4 people surviving the disease by 2034.

"That’s why we urgently need as many people as possible to sign up for Tough 10 and to raise money to help fund vital research."
