MP IVAN Lewis has been suspended by the Labour Party.

The party announced the Bury South MP's suspension this afternoon, just days after it was revealed an investigation was taking place following allegations of sexual harassment.

Mr Lewis has said he 'strongly disputes' the allegations and intends to cooperate with the party's investigation. 

The Labour Party has suspended Mr Lewis pending an investigation it has said.

A spokeswoman said: "The Labour Party takes all allegations of sexual harassment extremely seriously.

"Ivan Lewis is currently suspended from the Labour Party pending an investigation."

This afternoon, Mr Lewis said: "I am deeply saddened to hear of my suspension pending investigation.

"I strongly dispute the allegations and intend to co-operate fully with the Labour Party’s investigation.”

On Thursday, Mr Lewis announced he was stepping down from Greater Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham's team which is tackling rough sleeping in the region.

In a statement on Thursday, Mr Lewis said: "I will continue to prioritise the issues of rough sleeping and homelessness in my work as an MP locally and in Parliament.

"In the future, I hope to be able to resume my duties on behalf of the Mayor."
