OLDER people have been taking part in archery, zumba and other fitness activities to improve their health.

Funding has enabled residents living in respite accommodation in Unsworth and Whitefield to benefit from new sports classes.

Social care provider Persona has begun holding the sessions at its Elmhurst and Spurr House short stay centres.

The weekly activities are part of a 12-month scheme in partnership with Bury Council, funded by Sport England's Bridging the Gap programme.

Persona managing director Kat Sowden said: "Staying fit and active is vitally important at any time of life. But often older people struggle to find ways to enjoy physical activity, so we're delighted to be able to offer this exciting programme of activities.

"There are lots of sports and exercise classes to choose from with something for everyone. The sessions have had an uplifting effect on those taking part, with customers actively looking forward to what exciting activities are in store for future sessions."

The programme is initially being rolled out with older residents and people living with dementia.

Ms Sowden added: "For people with dementia in particular there is lots of evidence that keeping active is crucial. It's good for the body, but it's also good for the mind and wellbeing."

Pilates, dancing, aerobics and bowling are among the regular activities being run by sports education provider Shooting Stars.

The provision of activities will be expanded in 2018 to include those with physical and learning disabilities.

Persona Care and Support Ltd was set up in 2015 to run services previously provided in-house by Bury Council.
