Holt House, in Headlands Drive, revealed its new living area at a special afternoon tea requested by the residents.

The refurbishment was funded by the Salvation Army with the room replacing the previously separate lounge and dining areas.

It is hoped that the work will furnishing residents with a brighter and more accessible space.

The changes will also allow residents to sit in smaller groups, rather than a large circle as before, which can be beneficial for people with dementia.

Nikki Thompson, manager of Holt House, said: "The whole lounge has been completely changed and the room is amazing, it's absolutely beautiful.

"It used to be quite dark in here but we have now brightened it up and it's more homely and more user friendly.

"Residents can get into their chairs easier, and there's a lot more room for families.

"There's even more a lovely atmosphere in the room now and more of a buzz.

"We are looking forward to making our home more dementia friendly."

The room was official opened by the new Mayor of Bury, Councillor Jane Black on her first day on the job.

After cutting the ribbon, Cllr Black met with residents and Ms Thompson to hear about the refurbishment and life at the care home.

Cllr Black said: "This is my own ward so I'm absolutely delighted to be able to open lounge one my first day.

"The space is lovely and it's nice to see it's light and airy. Everybody is very happy and it feels much more like a living room environment."

As afternoon tea was being served, residents also enjoyed flute music provided by Claire Tristram and Radcliffe East councillor, Cllr Catherine Preston — whose mother Pamela Dugdale lives at the home.

The day was also made doubly special for resident Pat Jackson, who was celebrating her 86th birthday with her great granddaughter, Lily, aged 2, and daughter Pat McDaid.

A mother of three, grandmother of four and great grandmother of three, Mrs Jackson moved to Bury in 1965 after marrying sailor Harold Jackson in 1952.

Speaking about the renovated lounge, Mrs McDaid said: "The area is absolutely amazing. It's so bright and it's made such a difference. All the staff have worked so hard."
