A CAR was on fire in a Prestwich street in the early hours of the morning.

Flames were seen issuing from a silver Mercedes which was parked in Wiseman Terrace.

Firefighters from Broughton were called to the blaze shortly after 1.15am on Thursday.

Police said the incident is being treated as arson, and they are currently trying to trace the owner of the vehicle.

A spokesman for Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 1.22am to a car fire.

"Firefighters used a thermal imaging camera, tools to force entry into the vehicle, breathing apparatus and a hose reel to tackle the blaze.

"The crew was in attendance for about one hour."

A recovery vehicle has been called to retrieve the car from Wiseman Terrace.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: "We were called just after 1.45am to a vehicle on fire in Wiseman Terrace, Prestwich.

"A silver Mercedes was alight. This is being treated as arson.

"Our enquiries are ongoing.

"Officers are trying to establish who the vehicle belongs to."
