AN animal lover who supplied furry friends to the people of Radcliffe for many years has celebrated his 102nd birthday.

On September 24, great-great-grandfather Harry Makin celebrated his special day by enjoying tea, scones and birthday cake with the Mayor of Bury, Cllr Michelle Wiseman at Hollybank care home in Radcliffe.

Mr Makin, who ran a pet shop in Water Street until he retired at the age of 79, has three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He is also father to daughter Eunice Myatt, aged 70, and son Peter Makin, aged 66.

Mr Makin was brought up in Smyrna Street before moving to Alma Street after he married wife Martha, who died around 20 years ago at the age of 82.

His children both still call Radcliffe home with Eunice living in Ainsworth Road and Peter in Rigby Avenue.

Mrs Myatt said: “Dad has always been an animal lover. Him running the pet shop was such fun for us as children, I always had lots of animals at home as a youngster.

“He sold all sorts of pets to so many people in Radcliffe, and there are lots of people in the town who will know him. He also used to sell fishing equipment and bait. The shop was demolished after he retired.

“Dad has been healthy for most of his life and I think it is because he always walked everywhere, he never drove.

“He really enjoyed his get-together at the care home and looked very happy.”
