CONSTRUCTION on a controversial £2.3 million care unit is finally set to commence after months of delays.

The site of Canalside Gardens, between Whittaker Street and Parsonage Street, Radcliffe, has been left untouched for months since the old Whittaker House care home was demolished, after Stockport-based contractor GB Building Solutions went into administration.

Developer HB Villages has now appointed a new contractor, Lovell, to build the 14 flats for people with learning difficulties, autism and disabilities, with work on the project expected to resume this month.

However, nearby residents have been left frustrated by the way the site has been left in a state of ruin, which they say has made it dangerous for children playing in the street.

Michelle Edge, of Whittaker Street, said: “It’s just been left a complete mess.

“It’s become really dangerous now because there are a lot of kids who play around there.

“Everything is overgrown and I’ve seen the metal barriers blowing around in the wind.”

Last year, residents opposed plans for the new facility, complaining that it was inappropriate for a built-up area and would exacerbate existing parking and access issues.

Ivan Lewis, MP for Bury South, also formally objected to the plans.

In February, vandals broke into the site and caused £300 worth of damage after bricks were thrown at a jetwash and JCB digger.

Alastair Sheehan, Development Director of HB Villages, said: “We have appointed Lovell as the new contractor for Canalside Gardens and construction will commence at the end of June.”

Another neighbour in Parsonage Street, who asked to remain anonymous, said: “They haven’t said anything to us about the delays. We’ve been kept totally in the dark.

“Nothing has gone on for a long time; it’s been months since I’ve seen anyone there.

“Bits of the metal panelling have come off in the wind and it is dangerous for anyone at that end of the street.”

The apartments are to be run by landlord Inclusion Housing in partnership with HB Villages and Lifeways, which will provide on-site support for tenants.
