A DAY of live music and fun activities awaited residents willing to brave the rain in Radcliffe town centre on Saturday.

The Radcliffe Live summer fun day, organised by a group of town centre businesses aiming to boost activity in the area, saw four bands perform from the bandstand.

Local acts the Mighty Stone Cats, The Vincents, Groove Encounters and Idol Frets entertained visitors, as well as local dance troupe Freak Dance, and there was plenty of encouragement for the event's organisers despite the inclement weather.

Eugene O’Donnell, owner of New Button garment alterations and chairman of Radcliffe Business Group, said: “Obviously things didn’t go exactly according to plan because of the weather.

“But I know that the people who did brave the conditions and made it down there on the day really enjoyed themselves, and I personally really enjoyed all of the music that we had.

“It was great to see people braving the conditions on Saturday, including our MP Ivan Lewis, and stopping to see what we had on offer.

“Unfortunately the weather is the one thing that is out of our control, but all we can do is do our best to put on a good show and get people coming back into the town centre.

“That is the aim of all of this and something that we are passionate about, so we will do whatever we can to help achieve that.”

The group, which was first set up in 2007, last year developed the Radcliffe Town Team to aid with the regeneration of the town centre and they are now setting about bringing back business that has been lost because of the Church Street West roadworks.

There are plans to hold another Radcliffe Live event towards the end of the year, while the group is also working on proposals to decorate trees in the town centre with lights.
