A BID has been launched to re-open a pub that was shut down after a large-scale disturbance.

The Lord Raglan, in Water Street, Radcliffe, was closed by police after the incident on May 2 this year which left two men with injuries "consistent with stab wounds.”

It later had its licence revoked in a behind-closed-doors meeting of Bury Council’s licensing panel.

Last week, an application for a new premises license was made by Lord Raglan Ltd, which would allow for the sale and consumption of alcohol and live music until half past midnight every day.

Nearby residents have expressed concerns about the pub being re-opened after what police had described as a “history of other incidents of violence at the premises”.

Wendi McMahon said: “Knowing what the pub was like when it closed and the incidents that went on there, I would say no place like that should be able to open again.

“When you hear rumours about what happened it really scares people to think that we live in the same street.

“What I would like to see is for it to be taken over by a good family and run in a way where people can enjoy themselves again, instead of just having it cause trouble.”

John Stevens added: “It’s a bad pub that has been run badly. A lot of the people who drink there are idiots and I don’t want that sort of atmosphere in the area again.”

A police report said that the fight also saw a man hit around the head with a bottle and another punched to the face, while officers were initially unable to gain entry to the pub and then found that attempts had been made to clean up the scene.

The then licence holder and premises supervisor were both present, but neither they nor other members of staff reported the incident to the police.

Tena Ridgley, of Bradleys Barbers, which is opposite the pub, said: “If it was to open again then I wouldn’t want the same sort of people who go in there coming back.

“I have no problem with the place in theory, but it depends on who’s running it.

“The issue anyone will have is that the pub has a reputation and the same sort of customers are going to come back once it opens, so it will be difficult to change things.”

However, other residents said they were happy for the pub to re-open and that shutting it down has not reduced disturbances in the area.

One Seddon Street resident said: “The sooner the pub re-opens the better. I have drunk there for 15 years and have never had a problem with it.

“I have seen landlords come and go, and the last ones did a good job of keeping the trouble away, in my view – the incident that led to the pub being shut down was a one-off thing.

“The place has been closed for a couple of months and I think the level of noise in the area has just stayed the same.”

Neighbour Steven Wilson added: “It wouldn’t bother me if the pub re-opened. We heard all the rumours about what went on there but I have never had any problem with it personally.”
