A GRANDFATHER has warned that someone could be killed unless more road safety measures are introduced on a Radcliffe road used as a 'rat run'.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, a car ploughed through Patrick Neary's garden wall in Grindsbrook Road, the latest in a series of crashes at that spot.

The 61-year-old, who only moved into the house in February, is now eager to highlight the dangers and protect his three young grandchildren, aged one, three, and four.

Mr Neary, an electrical contractor, said: "There is quite a big garden in front of the house where my grandchildren can play, and the reality is that this could have happened at any time of the day.

"I shouldn't have to stop my grandkids going out there to remove the danger, there shouldn't be a danger to start with.

"The lad wasn't drinking or anything like that, he just lost control of the car. It's the road that is the problem.

"Apparently this type of accident has happened before at this property where the garden wall has been demolished, warning chevron speeding signage has been installed but this is ignored."

In January, Bury Council approved recommendations to make the road a 20mph zone.

Mr Neary added: "Having just moved into this property and having three young grandchildren, my concerns are that speeding motorist use Grindsbrook Road as a cut through rat run, avoiding having to stop at the main traffic lights at the crossing of Bolton Road and Ainsworth Road.

"When speeding motorists drive down Grindsbrook Road they are all too keen to speedily rejoin Ainsworth Road at the junction without fully slowing down and giving way to on-coming traffic. Something needs to be done to take away the attraction of a short cut before somebody is killed.

"This could be the installation of speed bumps, a 20mph limit, a narrowing of the exit road from Grindsbrook onto Ainsworth Road, flashing speed signage showing what speed the motorist is driving at.

"I know this was an accident, but accidents can be avoided by taking measures to deter the use of this road as a short cut. Action needs to be taken before a tragedy occurs.

"Cars and walls can be repaired or replaced, lives cannot."
