REPORTS of children damaging Radcliffe Tower by using it as a climbing frame will be investigated, police have promised.

The issue was raised at Tuesday’s township forum meeting and Inspector Jim Jones told residents that patrols will be sent to the area to investigate.

Carol Kemp, of the Friends of Radcliffe Manor group, said somebody could be hurt if the problem continues.

Mrs Kemp said: “People have noticed that there are children climbing on the tower and dislodging stones.

“They use it as a climbing frame and it’s not safe for them and will damage the tower.”

A new heritage trail showcasing the historic tower and other attractions around Close Park is due to open later this year, but has been delayed due to waterlogged conditions around the tower.

She added: “The enclosure around the manor is too wet to open at the moment.

“We have pencilled in quite a lot of events for when it does open, including a re-enactment group.”

“But we are at this stumbling block at the moment.”
