A MOTHER and daughter duo sacrificed 20 inches of their long locks to benefit others.

Gemma Carbert and her seven-year-old daughter, Sarah, decided to have their glossy hair cut off to raise money for Little Princess Trust, a charity which provides real-hair wigs to children who have lost their hair through cancer treatment.

The pair have so far raised £480 through sponsorships and are still collecting for the children’s charity.

Mrs Carbert, who lives in Water Street, Radcliffe, with her husband Paul, and their three children, Michael, aged 11, Sarah, and Thomas, aged two, said: “Sarah found out about the Little Princess Trust in November and asked what they did.

“I explained how some children are very unwell and the medicine they have sometimes makes their hair fall out.

“The charity makes real hair wigs free of charge for the children to make the feel better because sometimes they don't want to have no hair.

“I said how people can have their own hair cut and send it to the charity and you can also raise money as it costs a minimum of £350 to make just one wig.

“Straight away Sarah said she wanted to cut her hair and donate it. I said that if she was doing it then I would also.

“We decided as well as the hair cut we would also try and raise the £350. We’ve smashed the target and we're still going. “

The pair braved the chop at L’Salon, in Water Street, on Saturday, July 9, where Sarah had 12.5 inches cut off and Mrs Carbert lost 7.5 inches of hair, which will be donated to the charity.

Mrs Carbert, who works at Tesco Express in Radcliffe, has been growing her hair for the last seven years.

She added: “I've been growing my hair for the past seven years, but this is the first big cut Sarah has ever had. She's only had a couple of trims before now.

“Her school, my work and L’Salon have been a massive support to us both.”
