RESIDENTS are calling for action after a new housing development has caused flooding on their road.

Houses are being built by developer Bellway Homes on land off Salisbury Road, Radcliffe, but the residents who live on the main road have been suffering from flooding in their gardens.

Salisbury Road resident Frank Wilson, 71, said: “At the moment it’s OK because we haven’t had any rain and it’s been quite nice but it’s a big problem when it rains.

“Since Bellway started to build Salisbury Fields as it’s known they have dug up everything and installed new pipes. When it rains the road floods very quickly and people’s gardens have been flooded.

“I live about six doors away so I haven’t been personally flooded but other people on the road have.

“What’s worrying me is what is going to happen in the winter when it freezes over, it’s going to become very icy and dangerous. Before Bellway did their digging we didn’t have any problems and I have lived in this house since it was built over 50 years ago.”

“Something needs to be done to sort it out.”

Bellway were given permission for the residential development of 86 dwellings in July 2015. As part of the application Bellway had to submit a drainage statement which said that foul water would be drained into the existing water pipes on Salisbury Road.

United Utilities said they had no objection to the drainage proposal providing surface water drained separate from the foul water. They said the reason they imposed the condition was to: “Ensure a satisfactory form of development and to prevent an undue increase in surface water run off and to reduce the risk of flooding.”

Ian Brocklehurst, who has lived on the road for 23 years, said they have never had problems like this before.

He added: “I don’t think it’s anything to do with the pipes. They have raised the back of the land and sealed off the drains and the water is finding other ways to get out. So now it’s draining through one of our neighbours gardens and then down the drive on to the path. If it carries on it will soon be affecting more people. Belway need to accept that whatever they have done is wrong and it needs to be sorted out.”

A spokesman for Bury Council said: “We are aware of the problem, and take the matter very seriously. We are currently liaising with the developer to bring about a solution.”

Bellway Homes were contacted for comment.
