HUNDREDS of people lined the streets to cheer on cyclists in The Rake hill climb in Ramsbottom this afternoon.

The event, which organisers described as “the best ever”, had 105 riders tackle the challenging 875m course which has a maximum gradient of 23 per cent.

This year was the first time the prize money for men and women was equal and the decision to change it meant there was a 466 per cent increase in female participants, with 14 taking part.

Organiser Duncan Smith, from Bolton-based Lancashire Road Club, said: “It has gone amazingly well. So many people have come not just to take part but also to support.

“The Rake is an iconic climb and it’s tough, I think that’s why it attracts so many people and it’s a really good community event.

“We are delighted there has been a big increase in female competitors. We thought it was only fair they should have the same prize because they are doing the same course.”

Bolton teenager Ben Hudart, aged 17, made it an event to remember as he was crowned junior winner.

He said: “I’m over the moon to have won. It was very tough but it’s a great end to the season for me.”

A new women’s record of 3mins 8secs was set by Becky Lewis, from, Wrexham, and Joseph Clark, who was the fastest male, was only three seconds off the course record of 2mins 14secs.
