A DEBUT playwright has set his sights on further success after seeing his first script performed on stage.

Steve Hutchinson, who works as a debt collector and window cleaner, penned kitchen sink drama Nowhere 1992 last year and had it performed at the King’s Arms in Salford on three nights in December.

The 52-year-old, of Kilburn Road, Radcliffe, was inspired by the collection of colourful characters he met through work and has been so encouraged by the audience response to his play that he is planning to continue writing.

He said: “The play went extremely well, it couldn’t have gone any better.

“Now lots of people are asking me what my next play will be. All of the feedback I have had has been really positive.

“I do think this is something I would like to keep going with. There are so many characters that I have met over the years that I would definitely have enough material to write more.”

A sell-out crowd packed in to see the play’s opening night at the Salford venue, which is owned by Housemartins and Beautiful South singer Paul Heaton.

The play, which follows the lives of two siblings as their lives spiral out of control after their mother’s death, is now also set to be performed at a theatre in Manchester in April.

Mr Hutchinson added: “I can’t fault the cast at all, the acting was absolutely first class.

“The audience seemed very engrossed and I even saw one man in tears when he left, which really touched a nerve with me. That kind of reaction gives me a lot of faith that I can do this again and that people will respond well to it.”
