A COMMUNITY centre in Bury has unveiled a new quiet room as it continues to improve the facilities it has on offer.

Elton Community Centre, in Back Walshaw Road North, provides day provision for adults with a learning disability.

The centre can support people to take part in a wide range of activities inside or out in the community including cooking, arts and crafts, multi sensory stimulation and relaxation, college and education support plus health and lifestyle support.

Marie Lilley, treasurer of the Friends of Elton Community Centre Customers, said: “On Monday we officially opened Elton Community Centre Customers Quiet Room.

“We have been fundraising for the past five years to purchase equipment for our customers who are adults with physical and associated learning difficulties.”

First of all, £3000 was raised to purchase a Sorrento chair. The chair has an adjustable back recline which can accommodate users with limited disabilities and conditions.

Further money raised was then used to purchase sensory equipment to use in the quiet room that will suit all disabilities. Items include safety mirrors, a light curtain, bubble tube and a projector.

“We want to thank everyone for their support in raising the funds and includes a sponsored bike ride, donations from families and everyone who has attended our coffee mornings,” added Mrs Lilley.

The room was opened by Mr Phyian in memory of his daughter Suzanne who loved to use the room but passed away in April last year.
