n A CHANNELISATION scheme has been prepared to aid traffic turning right off Bury New Road, Radcliffe, into Radcliffe Moor Road.

Road markings will divide the carriageway into three lanes, one for Bolton to Bury traffic, one for Buy to Bolton traffic, and the third providing a central lane for vehicles from Bolton which are to turn right into Radcliffe Moor Road.

The scheme involves slight carriageway widening, the prohibition of parking on the north side of the major road and the re-siting of bus stops.

It is one of several measures suggested by the South East Lancashire and North East Cheshire Advisory Traffic Management Unit to improve traffic flow on the A58.

Both the Streets and Plans Committee and Departmental Committee of Radcliffe Council have approved new sites for bus stops on the stretch of Bury New Road affected by the proposals.

n A LOCAL firm this week despatched Radcliffe’s latest contribution to the export drive - a four foot tall red and black ‘Wot Not’. Yes, a Wot Not.

For those who do not know, a Wot Not is a cuddly toy made of suede and wool - a sort of trendy teddy bear.

The cuddly creatures are made by Solar Wear Company, in Sion Street, who recently completed a larger-than-usual one for Canada.

The giant ‘Wot Not’ - they are normally only about four inches tall - was flown from London to Canada on Tuesday where it will be the centre of a publicity campaign prior to a sales drive for its ‘mini’ cousins.

n ONLY 16 of the 119 shopkeepers who petitioned against the introduction of a Saturday market attended a meeting arranged by Radcliffe Council for them to voice their objections.

But the Council on Monday rejected a Departmental Committee recommendation that application be made to The Ministry of Housing and Local Government for approval of the proposal, and instead deferred the matter for further consideration and discussions with the local Chamber of Trade.

The decision was taken after pleas that it would do no harm to delay the scheme so that all viewpoints and relevant information could be considered.
