Do you think it is right that the landlord of the Duke William pub in Ainsworth has been ordered to pull down a smoking shelter which had been built without planning permission?

Next stage of hall’s repairs are set to start

THE next phase of refurbishment work will start at Ainsworth's community hall later this month.

The centre was built as a school in the late 19th century and taken over by Ainsworth Parish Church in 1985.

A rolling programme of work has seen more than £96,000 spent on major repairs to the building since 2003, including a new kitchen, a new roof over the main hall, and new heating controls.

The latest part of the work will see two areas of the roof replaced, meaning that the whole roof will have been upgraded.

A flat roof over the toilet area will be replaced with a pitched roof to stop water getting inside the building. The work will cost around £14,000, with £10,000 funded by a grant from the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme and £1,000 from Bury Council.

There are also problems with water getting through a flat roof over the kitchen, cloakroom and corridor area.

The roof will be replaced and further work carried out to improve it.

This will cost just over £4,000, with £2,000 paid for by a grant from Bury Council's community development fund.

The rest of the money needed to pay for the two projects has been raised by villagers.

Work will start to replace the roof over the toilets on May 27, with work on the other area due to start within the next few weeks.

The community hall will continue to be open to the many groups who meet there, though some areas will be closed off while work takes place.

Further work to replace the toilets and paint the inside of the building will start later this year.

Mike Watson, chairman of the community hall, said: "Rainwater has been getting into some parts of the building for ten years, so it will be good when the roof is completely replaced. I am sure that it will make a big difference to the people using the hall and improve the facilities on offer.

"Applying for grants and fundraising ourselves has been very hard work. We have raised a lot of money by holding community events. People have been very supportive in helping us to raise all the money."

l The next fundraising event will be a race night at 7pm on Saturday, May 17 at the community hall. Tickets cost £5 and include supper. For more details: contact Mike Watson on 01204 370376.
