CHILDREN from Ramsbottom were among those who immersed themselves in the world of Harry Potter for a magical night of activities and events.

Smithills Hall in Bolton was transformed into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for a Harry Potter book night, as part of a national campaign organised by publishers Bloomsbury.

About 130 children attended the event, where fans of the film and book franchise could enjoy a magic show, tuck into some magical treats from the films, and even hold a barn owl, just like Harry Potter with his owl, Hedwig.

Fancy dress was encouraged, with many of those attending opting to come as Harry Potter himself, complete with drawn on scar and wiry glasses, as well as his friend Hermione Granger, and professors from the magical school.

Fan Freddie Gorton, from Stubbins, came dressed as Harry Potter, and held a barn owl.

The nine-year-old said: "I have seen all the films, and I have read three of the books.

"I read the first book when I was six, and I really enjoy reading them. It was great to be able to hold an owl, just like Harry."

His mum, Alisa Gorton, added: "He is a really big fan, I think he has read the first book about three times. It is great, because as well as enjoying the story, it helps with his reading skills at school."
