YOUNGSTERS became eco-warriors for the day after receiving tips from a recycling expert at their Ramsbottom school.

Peel Brow Primary in Fir Street welcomed Bury Council’s recycling awareness officer, Talat Afzal, to their classrooms.

Ms Afzal spoke to pupils during their assembly and gave advice and information about how they can reduce, reuse and recycle.

Year 4 pupil, Rhys Hughes, aged eight, competed against teacher Sarah Lowe to see who could sort the most amount of waste in the quickest time. They had to decide which items went into the blue, green, and black bins.

Headteacher Mr Danny Mellor said: “The children were totally engaged in the whole process.

“We have already changed some of the green bags we use in school, so all the paper towels can be recycled.”

Pupil Libby Swarbrick said: "It was very interesting. I didn't know we had to take the lids off the milk bottles before they went into the recycling bin. I'll make sure my mum does that now."

Ms Afzal added: "Peel Brow School is always keen to support our campaigns, and we will be coming in to speak to the parents soon too.

“The children were wonderful and showed lots of knowledge and understanding already. What a great school.”
