CHILDREN at Greenmount Primary School are being able to dig deep for knowledge in their new outdoor classroom.

The habitats area, which includes a pond, bird table, bug hotel and seating made out of tree stumps, came to life thanks to £1,500 which came from the parent teacher association's (PTA) fundraising activities.

Leanne Gray, a member of the PTA, said: “The children are very excited about being able to get in there now the area has been restored.

“It was previously very overgrown and wasn’t used at all. Now it will be incorporated into the curriculum, so they can learn about science and observe different creatures.”

Funds raised to pay for the area’s makeover came from a Spring disco, a Mother’s Day gift sale and the Christmas fair at the school in Holhouse Lane.

With the help of Danny English, from The CommuniTree Initiative in Bury, the area was designed and created to incorporate nature into the children’s learning.

The CommuniTree Initiative specialises in outdoor education and aims to help people connect with nature.
