A BID to save a former bowling green in Ramsbottom has been given a boost, after it was branded a community asset.

Ramsbottom Heritage Society has succeeded in getting the renowned recreational landmark, situated behind the Grant’s Arms in Market Place, registered as an Asset of Community Value (ACV), after agreement from Bury Council.

It is part of the fight by locals to save the land which has been used for public recreation for more than 150 years and prevent it from development.

A plan to build flats on the plot was rejected by Bury Planning Committee, but a new application has now been submitted.

Councillor Luise Fitzwalter, who set up Save the Bowling Green, said: “The fact that this land is now a registered ACV may be considered a material consideration if this goes to the planning committee.

“It is a grey area but some planning authorities have done this, and the Government intends to bring in regulations to this effect.

“However, it will still be for a local planning committee to decide whether the status of an ACV is a sufficient material consideration to refuse permission for change of use."

She added: “Thanks to the Heritage Society for all their work in making this application.

“This is just a first stage, but the fight to reclaim the land for the community will go on.”

John Ireland, who submitted the bid on behalf of the Ramsbottom Heritage Society, said: “Hopefully the new-found asset status will help to preserve this historic open green space that has long been an invaluable and integral part of the fabric and heritage of the town.

“Without this protection, it would be a sad day indeed where one of the gems of the conservation area in the Market Place, at the heart of town, was to become just another building plot.”

Developers Astim Ltd have submitted amended plans to build 24 retirement flats with 19 parking spots.

A report from Astim to the council said: "The layout has evolved over numerous months of discussions and meetings with Bury Council planning officers.”
