A RAMSBOTTOM-based charity and its leader have been recognised for their hard work in the community.

Bury Speakeasy and its chief executive Mrs Gill Pearl have jointly received The Robin Tavistock Award 2015

The non-profit organisation is dedicated to long-term support for people with aphasia, and mother-of-two Gill Pearl was described as a ‘driving force’ in Speakeasy’s survival.

Mrs Pearl, a mother-of-two from Bolton, said: “We’re the tenth recipients of the award and I’ve always looked up to the others and admired them.

“I’m completely taken aback to have been awarded it jointly with Speakeasy.

“We were so honoured when we found out.”

The Robin Tavistock Award is presented annually to an individual, or group, who is inspirational and who has made a significant contribution in the field of aphasia.

Speakeasy was one of the first organisations to develop the use of computers for therapy as well as other innovative group activities.

Mrs Pearl, who has worked with Speakeasy for the past 13 years, was chosen to receive the award not only because of her dedication to the charity but also because of her involvement in projects and research, and her determination to improve the quality of life of those affected by aphasia

Mrs Pearl received her award from Henrietta, the Duchess of Bedford, at a ceremony in September in London while Speakeasy received the award at the annual Speakeasy conference on October 19 held at Christ Church & Neighbourhood Centre, in Great Eaves Road, Ramsbottom.
