TOTTINGTON High School has been praised by Ofsted inspectors who visited last month.

The school, in Laurel Street, was told that it had maintained its 'Good' status in a report published last week, following the inspection on November 3.

Headteacher Brian Duffy said: "We are pleased with the report and it is a true reflection of the good work we are doing at THS and the progress we are making, especially in this time of volatility in education.

"Staff who have been here for a long time have said this is as good a report as they have seen for the school.

"It has recognised the achievements and attributes of our young people and the dedication put in by our team of staff, supported by our parents. Together we support our children who 'leave the school as well-rounded individuals with ambition and self-confidence.'"

The report praised the school for its "drive for improvement" over recent years, since the school's last inspection in 2012.

Inspector Patrick Geraghty wrote: "The leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection.

"Teachers have a good understanding of their pupils’ learning needs and how best to secure and accelerate their progress and strengthen their aspirations.

"Comprehensive school information indicates that current pupils are making good progress in all year groups.

"An air of purposeful learning permeates the school. Pupils want to learn and to do well; they have strong aspirations and ambitions. Pupils’ behaviour is good. They are polite, courteous and inquisitive and enjoy expressing their views.

"Good relations between staff and pupils enhance this welcoming, lively and developing school community

"Pupils spoken to said they felt confident in their teachers and safe in school. Many said that they enjoyed coming to school. Pupils have a very positive attitude towards their next steps in education or the world of work.

"The school has a strong partnership with parents, which is reflected in its parent partnership award."
