THOUSANDS of visitors turned out to enjoy the sunshine at Greenmount’s village party last week.

The popular village green was renamed at the annual Bank Holiday celebration, which attracted around 1,500 faces for the sixth year running.

Greenmount Village Community group unveiled a sign officially renaming Nailers Field, to Greenmount Village Green, thanks to a donation from Greenmount WI.

Guests flocked to enjoy various events at Greenmount Old School, in Brandlesholme Road, Greenmount United Reformed Church, in Holcombe Road, and Greenmount Cricket Club, in Brandlesholme Road.

Stalls from charities and volunteer groups filled the village green and children enjoyed funfair rides and an inflatable obstacle course.

Alistair Waddell, chairman of the Greenmount Village Community group, said: “The weather was against us to start with but after we finally finished setting everything up, the sun soon came out and lots of people attended so overall it went very well.

“We renamed Nailers Field because in a sense the history behind that name has disappeared.

“There was once a pub facing the field called the Nailers and that’s where it got the name from. But that pub hasn’t been around for years so we wanted to call it the village green as a community area for people to enjoy.

“It’s been amazingly well received and accepted by the community and thanks to a donation from Greenmount WI we were able to unveil an official sign.

“We had the usual collectors fair, painting and modelling workshops, food and drink and coconut shy.

“Something new we added to the entertainment was a radio controlled boats pond – lots of children and adults enjoyed seeing the boats sail around our man-made pond.

“They got to have a go themselves and it seemed a success.

“We’re already looking forward to returning next year for the seventh party on the first Bank Holiday weekend of the month.”
