ANGRY residents are continuing in their campaign to improve road safety near their homes.

Tottington residents have been complaining to Bury Council about what they call the “danger junction” from Scobell Street on to Bury Road, Tottington, for many years.

However, they were not happy with the response they have been given by the council and are continuing to campaign for the installation of a mini roundabout.

On Wednesday, Peter Graham, aged 81, attended the meeting of the Ramsbottom, Tottington and North Manor Township Forum, at Tottington Methodist Church, to air his grievances again.

He said: “We are sick and fed up of this situation. We have had endless trouble for at least 12 years now and we have got nowhere with the council.

“It beggars belief. There’s these horrific crashes and nothing is being done. We are going to continue campaigning until something is sorted. We want a roundabout installed because turning left out of that junction is so dangerous.”

A spokesman for the council previously told the Bury Times that it had explained why a mini- roundabout was not feasible.

They added: “While we sympathise with Mr Graham, there is no easy solution. We have looked, and will continue to look, at the available options in the context of other hot-spot areas in the borough and the funding available.”

Councillors at the meeting agreed to look in to it for Mr Graham if he left his details.

The request from Mr Graham comes as a report from the Older Drivers Task Force was released that stressed the need to accommodate the needs of older people must be accommodated who drive on Britain’s roads.

One of the ways it suggested the safety improvements was by looking in to replacing T-junctions with roundabouts.

The report said: “Given that the percentage of serious accidents at T-junctions increases significantly with age after 65, and that this does not happen at roundabouts, it would be worth studying the value of installing mini-roundabouts at busy T-junctions.”

Mr Graham said: “We have had petitions that we have sent in to the council and still nothing has been done.

“The council is adamant there isn’t a problem but we’re not going to stop until something is done.”
