POOL balls were hurled in a pub brawl which led to two men being jailed.

Brothers Matthew and Thomas Williams were sentenced to a total of 14 months in prison after Bolton Crown Court heard how they threw pint glasses and pool balls at the three others during a row.

However, Judge Graeme Smith spared Philip Taylor, Ryan Parker and Curtis Trippier immediate prison after hearing they had been more restrained.

The court heard how the fight broke out in the early hours of February 6 when the two groups of men were at the Globe Inn on Tottington Road, Elton.

Elizabeth Thomas, prosecuting, said there had been animosity as 36-year-old Philip Taylor is dating Matthew Williams' ex-girlfriend.

Violence broke out at around 12.30am when Thomas Williams threw two pool balls at Parker, causing him to duck.

He then picked up a bar stool whilst his brother then hurled a glass at Taylor, Parker and Trippier.

Taylor and Parker were said to have acted as peacemakers throughout the five-minute confrontation, but then lost patience with the Williams brothers.

Matthew Williams, aged 25, was held down and punched by Parker and Taylor as he lay on the floor.

And 27-year-old Thomas Williams was put in a headlock by Trippier who attacked him with 29-year-old Parker.

Matthew and Thomas Williams, both of Connaught Street, Bury; Taylor, of Elleswater Close, Tottington; Parker, of Deal Street, Bury, and Trippier, of Heath Avenue, Summerseat, all pleaded guilty to affray.

Judge Smith jailed Thomas Williams for eight months and Matthew Williams for six months.

Trippier was given a six-month jail term suspended for a year, while Taylor was given a four-month jail sentence suspended for a year.

Parker was sentenced to eight-months in jail suspended for 18 months.
