A TOWN went “quackers” for its annual duck race which raised thousands of pounds for local and national charities.

The popular event, organised by Ramsbottom Rotary Club, saw more than 1,500 ducks of the plastic variety take to the River Irwell near the Bridge Street Gardens.

There were several races, including a children’s boat race featuring 35 youngsters many of whom made their own vessels. or took them along.

Bury Sub Aqua Club and Bury Kayak Club were on hand to ensure the ducks and boats did not go astray.

It is not known exactly how much was raised but organisers are hoping to have made around £3,500.

Trevor Hoyle, chairman of fundraising for the Ramsbottom Rotary Club, said it had been a fantastic event.

He said: “It was an absolutely wonderful turnout.

“We actually ran out of tabards as there were so many volunteers. The weather was really good for us. It rained on Saturday and that was good because it swelled the river for the racing on Sunday.

“It was a fantastic turnout and hundreds of people came along to watch. A good time was had by all.”
